Cockroaches
What is a Cockroach?
In the United States, around 30 species of Cockroach are connected with human occupancy but only two of these are regarded as well known pests – the American Cockroach and the German Cockroach. The two species differ in a variety of ways:
- Periplaneta Americana – The American Cockroach, can be found outdoors and indoors. A prolific breeder, the pregnant American Cockroach sticks her egg cases to any protected area after carrying them for around 6 days. There they will incubate, undisturbed, for around two months before emerging. Taking 6 to 12 months to mature, the adult American Cockroach is a red-brown color with lighter colored edges around the body and grows to about 1 to 1 ½ inches.
- Blattella Germanica – The German Cockroach, is also a prolific breeder, with the pregnant female carrying up to 40 eggs at a time enabling her to create three or four generations in a twelve month period. Adult German Cockroaches measure around ¼ to 5/8 inches long – much smaller than the American Cockroach – and are a tan/light brown color with dark stripes running from front to back on the body.
Why do I have them?
American Cockroaches can be found breeding primarily in underground areas such as sewer systems and utility networks. Aside from underground areas, places of high humidity are favored by cockroaches such as pipes and drains, basements, steam tunnels and boiler rooms. The German Cockroach can breed nearly exponentially given the right combination of food, water, warmth and humidity and it can take just a single female carrying eggs to create an infestation. They are known to move from location to location via human means – in bags, boxes and on clothing.
Are they dangerous?
While not normally associated with biting, Cockroaches can and do bite, but it's as carriers of illness and bacteria that they are primarily known. Among the illnesses linked to Cockroaches are salmonella poisoning, asthma attacks, dysentery and diarrhea.
