Pavement Ants
What are Pavement Ants?
Pavement Ants are small, black/brown ants with legs and antennae paler than the body and are one of the most numerous and common ants to assault homes and buildings. Distinguishable by two spines on the back and grooves on the head and thorax, they range from 1/8th to 1/16th of an inch long and pavement ants can be found in Manhattan as well as all of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut as well as many areas of the United States.
Why do I have them?
As the name suggests, Pavement Ants make their home alongside, underneath and in cracks in pavement, driveways, sidewalks, patios and building foundations. They are incredibly tenacious, creating nests in the most difficult and seemingly impenetrable areas, leaving small piles of dirt at the surface after digging ventilation tunnels to the nest. Pavement Ants are aggressive and when a colony begins to find new ground, typically in early spring, they often attack nearby colonies and large scale battles can be seen to be fought on sidewalks and pavement, leaving many hundreds if not thousands of ant’s dead. Pavement Ants not only nest outside but they can be found inside buildings, nesting in cracks in walls, under floors and also in insulation. The primary reason for having a Pavement Ant infestation is food. They will eat nearly everything they can find, including pet food, bread and even other insects.
Are they dangerous?
Pavement Ants are not considered a dangerous pest but can contaminate food and are undesirable due to the huge number that can invade a property in a short period.
