Spiders
What is a House Spider?
The most common spider found in the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and throughout the United States and Canada is the ‘American House Spider’ also known as the ‘House Spider’ or ‘Domestic Spider’. These spiders generally have a body that is 3/16 to 5/16 in (5-8 mm) long, with the male having a longer abdomen compared to the females rounded abdomen.
Why do I have them?
Although the House Spiders natural habitat is outside in protected areas – under eaves, around windows and doors etc – they will move inside buildings, garages, warehouses, sheds, barns etc to seek a more secure location to construct their webs.
Are spiders dangerous?
This very common species of spider is capable of biting but occurrences are extremely rare and they do not carry venom that is poisonous to humans. Dust collecting on the numerous webs built in many places would be the main cause of concern.
How do I get rid of?
You can greatly minimize the likelihood of spiders entering your property as the American House Spider will only enter a building if it is made easy for it to do so. Therefore, any bushes, trees or shrubs bordering the property should be kept trimmed back and any cracks or holes around any points of access – windows, doors, basements – should be filled or repaired. Assured Environments are only a call away to assist you in removing this nuisance pest.
Can I do it myself?
There are various Do-It-Yourself products on the market that claim to get rid of Spiders but they will not be fully effective unless all precautions and arrangements have been made to prevent the pest entering the property in the first place.
