A new year is the perfect opportunity to look at current priorities and determine which ones to prioritize. In your personal life, they might have to do with health or saving money. In work, they could be about making or reaching goals better. If you own or manage a commercial property, one of those goals could be improving your pest exclusion practices.

Keeping pests out of your business is an important and valid goal, and a great new year’s resolution. We want to help, so we put together this list of commercial pest prevention new year’s resolution tips. Follow these tips as a 2019 goal, and you’ll be on your way to a happy, pest-free new year.

Clean out your dumpsters and garbage bins more often

Successful pest prevention goes beyond just taking out the garbage regularly. If you never clean out your bins, for instance, garbage will stick to its walls and bottom. This sticky garbage builds up over time, turning into a sludge. As bacteria develops in the sludge, it will become a grade-A #1 buffet for pests everywhere.

Once a week, rinse your office garbage bins with soapy water and wipe them with a microfibre cloth. While you’re at it, invest in trash chute cleaning to make your entire garbage handling process more pest prevention-friendly.

Check the perimeter once a day

This resolution kills two birds with one stone: you get a little bit of exercise and you protect your property against pests. Walk around your building once a day. During this walk, check the foundation, floor, windows, and walls for breaches.

Look for cracked bricks, damaged screens, worn-down caulking, and loose sealant. Patch up these breaches as you find them, and you’ll deprive pests of their primary way into your building.

Enlist your tenants!

As the manager of a commercial property, you probably have a lot of people to look after. Teaching these people how to prevent pests this new year will go a long way toward avoiding future infestations.

Make sure your tenants know how to spot and report common pest infestations if they ever find them. Teach them about risk factors, assign proactive prevention roles, and reward proactive pest prevention measures. If all your tenets come together, your pest problems will be nothing more than a memory from years past.
