How to Keep Ticks Out of Your Business This Summer

View Previous Post | View Newer Post

You can't spell tick without "ick” for good reason. Ticks are creepy, crawly, and capable of spreading of multiple diseases, including the ever-troublesome Lyme disease. There are over 900 species of tick. The ones most commonly found in North America include American Dog Ticks, Brown Dog Ticks, and Deer Ticks. These ticks are all over the United States, most frequently found in outdoor, woodsy areas with shrubs and tall grass. They’re really annoying, especially this year, and especially in the summertime.

Unfortunately, ticks are something we’re all going to have watch out for this summer. That’s why we put together this guide on how to keep them away from your business. Follow these steps, and you won’t have to worry about ticks this summer or for any of the summers to come.

Make sure tenants or employees understand proper tick-proofing.

The quickest way to get a tick infestation in your business is to bring them in on your person. Ticks “quest” for host-victims by perching on low-hanging vegetation and waiting to grab on. In New York, they’re most common in parks and grassy areas, but they’ll hunt anywhere they can.

Recommend that the people frequently coming in-and-out of your business wear long pants and full-coverage clothing. Take special care if you work near or among plants and other vegetation. If employees need to spend time outdoors, make sure they visually inspect themselves for ticks upon coming back inside. Remember: it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Maintain your building’s landscaping.

Overgrown landscaping is tick paradise. They love long grass, weeds, overgrown shrubbery, and robust trees. If your building has grass, make sure to mow it on a regular basis. Similarly, keep bushes, ornamental grasses, and other shrubbery trimmed short during summer. As a general rule, ticks like dark, wooded areas that are prone to moisture. They don't like areas that are sunny and dry.

Be aware of preventative measures

There are additional things you can do that make your property unappealing to ticks. For one, you can sprinkle diatomaceous earth on your landscaping or greenery. Diatomaceous earth is a natural product that you can get at any home and garden store. It dries out ticks and bugs that crawl through it.

If you do decide to use diatomaceous earth, don't do it on windy days. You want to avoid having the wind catch it and carry it to areas where it can harm helpful creatures like bees. You could also plant several common plants that ticks don’t like in your garden or green space. Ticks avoid fragrant plants like rosemary, lemongrass, lavender, and sage.

Following these tips will put you a long way toward keeping ticks out of your business this summer. Sometimes even the best-laid plans fall through, however. There’s a reason ticks have lasted this long: they’re frustratingly good at what they do.

If you ever find yourself with a tick problem despite your best efforts, there’s no need to worry. All you have to do is call the pros at Assured Environments - we’ve got you covered.
