What Do Bed Bugs Look Like?

Worried you might have a bed bug problem, but not sure what they look like? Be on the lookout for the following:

  • Size: Eggs are approximately 1/32 inch long while adults are approximately 1/4 to ⅜ inch long.
  • Color: Their eggs are white, babies (nymphs) are colorless, and adults are a mahogany or rusty brown.
  • Shape: All bed bugs are oval-shaped and have six legs. Their feet have claws, which means they can’t move easily on smooth surfaces, such as plastic or metal.
  • Other characteristics: Bed bugs are wingless insects. Their bodies are flattened on the top and bottom with microscopic hairs that give them a wrinkled appearance. After feeding, bed bugs are engorged with blood, which increases their body length and turns them red or red-brown.
  • Because of their size, bed bugs can hide easily in places like mattress seams, behind headboards, and inside box springs. If you think you've seen one but aren't sure, the safest approach is to schedule a bed bug inspection. Even a single bed bug can lead to a much larger issue.

Understanding Bed Bugs

They don't fly or jump, but bed bugs move quickly and are brilliant at hiding. They're also nocturnal and will feed when humans are sleeping. Furthermore, they don't like to live on humans but will stay nearby, usually in bedrooms or living rooms.

They're often brought into a building through luggage, furniture, or clothing. That's one reason why infestations are common in places with frequent turnover, like hotels and apartment complexes.

Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation

Bed bugs leave behind a lot of visual cues that indicate an infestation:

  • Unexplained bite marks can signal a bed bug problem. While not everyone reacts to bites, some people develop an itchy, red cluster of bumps on exposed skin.
  • Inexplicable small brown or red stains on your sheets are a common sign that you have an infestation.
  • Look for visual cues like clusters of eggs and bugs (little dark spots) in seams and crevices on your bed or fabric furniture.
  • Another sign is the presence of small, pale-yellow shed skins left behind as the bugs grow.
  • A sweet, musty odor may be noticeable in the room if the infestation has spread.

As Bed bugs often stay hidden, the signs aren't always apparent immediately. A professional bed bug inspection is often necessary to confirm activity and determine how far it's spread.

Bed Bug Reproduction and Life Cycle

Bed bugs don’t become fertile until they reach their final, adult life stage. On average, an adult female bed bug will lay 131 eggs in her lifetime, or approximately one to five eggs each day. Their nests can be found in bed frames, floors, walls, and other concealed sites.

Bed bug eggs can take anywhere from six to 28 days to hatch, depending on the environment  and temperature. Warm temperatures and readily available food allow bed bugs to thrive. They develop quickly and reproduce so often that they can produce five to seven generations in a single year.

How Fast Do Bed Bugs Spread?

Bed bugs don't reproduce as quickly as some pests, but given the right conditions, their numbers can rise fast. A single female can lay hundreds of eggs in her lifetime. Eggs hatch in about one to two weeks, and the bugs reach maturity in four to five weeks, depending on the environment.

Because they hide well and are primarily active at night, you may not realize how bad the issue is until the infestation becomes serious. In connected buildings, like apartments or hotels, they can move through wall voids and electrical outlets, spreading room to room. The longer they go untreated, the harder they are to control.

Early detection is critical in commercial settings, such as hospitality, where turnover is high. Learn more about how we help protect the hospitality industry here.

Bed Bug Control and Prevention

There’s no substitute for professional bed bug control, but there are a few steps you can take on your own. The best way to control bed bugs is to find where they’re hiding and keep those areas as clean as possible. Consistently vacuum all upholstery, mattresses, and pillows. Launder all clothing and bedding weekly in the warmest setting possible. Get rid of bed skirts or dust ruffles and keep blankets or covers off the floor.

If you have an infestation, treat mattresses, box springs, couches, and other upholstered furniture or cushions with ‘dry’ steam using professional-grade steamers with low vapor flow rates. You can use store-bought chemicals, but be sure you treat the entire infestation, or the bed bugs could return.

The surest way to eliminate bugs is with is professional pest control. At Assured Environments, our bed bug pest control service uses a  variety of methods, including heat treatment, to remove the bed bugs. Our experts will return to your site for a bed bug inspection to reevaluate the situation and apply further treatment  if necessary to ensure the bed bugs have completely gone.

Bed Bug Behavior and Diet

Bed bugs feed on human blood and other mammals. As soon as they hatch, baby bed bugs, or nymphs, look for a host to begin feeding. Once they locate a food source, they attach to its skin and probe for a good access point using their straw-like mouths. A feasting bed bug takes anywhere from three to10 minutes to complete a meal.

Bed bugs are shy, nocturnal creatures that mainly feed at night. Once finished, they leave the host and return to their hiding place for several days to completely digest the meal. This cycle repeats each time the bed bug becomes hungry, usually every five to 10 days.

Understanding how and where they feed is key to effective bed bug pest control. We use this knowledge to track infestations and treat hiding spots that are easy to miss without expert support.

Assured Pest Solution's Conventional Treatment

Bed bugs are resilient pests; a one-time DIY fix often isn't enough.

Our IPM treatment method targets bed bugs by timing services to align with their life cycles. After treatment, taking preventive steps is essential to help avoid re-infestations. We use conventional tools to eliminate active bed bug infestations and support long-term protection. This four-part treatment comprises:

  • HEPA Vacuuming: We use high-powered HEPA filtration vacuum to target bed bug-infested areas and remove the pests quickly and effectively.
  • Steam Treatment: We apply low-humidity steam treatment to areas that  our HEPA vacuums can’t reach.
  • Dusting of Voids: To catch bed bugs  hiding inside walls, we inject residual dust insecticide into wall voids.
  • Crack and Crevices: Residual pesticide is used to kill bed bugs hiding in cracks and crevices.

For your convenience and improved results, Assured Environments also offers:

Pre-Preparation Services

Successful treatment starts with proper preparation of the affected area. With our pre-preparation services, our team handles all the necessary prep work for you, helping to ensure the best possible results.

Offsite Fumigation

When large quantities of personal items are involved, remediation can be more efficient through our enclosed offsite fumigation chamber. Items are securely loaded, transported to our fumigation facility, treated, and returned within 24 – 48 hours.

Thermal Treatment

We also offer in-structure remediation using our portable thermal heat system. This one-service approach uses forced hot air technology for quick, dependable results, and can help eliminate bed bugs at all stages. As a chemical-limited or chemical-free process, it’s a ‘green’ option that can return a property to use within 12 hours and address bed bug activity that could impact your reputation.

Bed Bug Extermination Process

Every bed bug exterminator service starts with a full visual bed bug inspection, and may involve our K9 dog team to detect hidden infestations.

Our goal is to reduce downtime and disruption to your operations. Treatments may involve applying to cracks and crevices, mattress seams, box springs, and a detailed follow-up. Our team will also guide you through post-treatment protocols and help with any questions.

Depending on the severity of the infestation, the process may involve several visits. Sometimes, we recommend installing passive monitors to check for any remaining activity.

IPM Protocols

We utilize a four-part conventional IPM protocol that effectively eliminates bed bugs. This protocol includes powerful HEPA vacuuming, low-humidity steam treatment, residual dust for wall voids, and targeted insecticide application in cracks and crevices.

Heat Treatments

We use advanced thermal treatments using portable forced-hot-air systems and industrial fans to deliver uniform, lethal heat throughout infested areas. These treatments eliminate all life stages, often within just 12 hours, and reduce or eliminate chemical use.

Trusted Support

Provides comprehensive support with pre-preparation services and optional off-site fumigation for personal items, ensuring thorough eradication and convenience for clients through carefully handling their belongings.

Bed Bug Pest Control FAQs

Bed bugs are not known to spread disease, but their bites can cause discomfort, allergic reactions, and sleep disruption. Always consult a healthcare provider if you experience skin irritation or symptoms after a suspected bite.

Adult bed bugs are reddish-brown and may look darker after feeding. Nymphs are pale or almost clear when they first hatch.

Bed bugs typically live four to six months. In some cases, they may survive longer, especially in cooler environments where they go without feeding.

Common signs include bite marks, minor blood stains on bedding, dark droppings, and shed skins. A professional bed bug inspection is the most reliable way to confirm an infestation.

They usually spread by hitching rides on clothing, luggage, or used furniture. In multi-unit buildings, they can also move through walls and electrical outlets.

You may see small brown or black dots (waste), reddish smears (blood), or the bugs themselves hiding along seams or under tags.

Before treatment, remove clutter, vacuum thoroughly, and follow your technician's preparation instructions. Proper prep helps ensure the treatment reaches all hiding places.
